This Christmas Mice Recipe is a popular holiday treat in our household. They’re fun, simple to make, and require no baking at all. With just a microwave to melt chocolate, maraschino cherries are transformed into bite-sized mice with almond ears that are perfectly sized to be picked up and eaten right by the tail.


These little treats are especially great for holiday parties, cookie trays, or making with kids, since they come together quickly and look much more complicated than they actually are.

Ingredients-Christmas Mice Recipe

  • Hershey’s Kisses – 1 per mouse

  • Maraschino cherries with stems – 1 per mouse

  • Sliced almonds – 2 whole slices per mouse (for the ears)

  • Melting chocolate – about a handful of disks or coins


Equipment-

  • Microwave-safe bowl (for melting chocolate)

  • Spoon or spatula for stirring

  • Paper towels (for drying the cherries)

  • Plate or parchment paper (for setting the mice on while the chocolate hardens)


Instructions- Christmas Mice


Prep

There is very little prep required for Christmas Mice.

  1. Unwrap the Hershey’s Kisses and set them aside. You will need one for the head of each mouse.

  2. Sort through the sliced almonds and select whole pieces that are roughly the same size. Slight differences just add character and personality to each mouse. Each mouse will need two almond slices.

  3. Remove the maraschino cherries from the jar and place them on a paper towel. Pat them dry well, excess juice will make it harder for the chocolate to stick later. You will need one cherry with the stem per mouse. Make sure the cherries still have their stems intact. The stem becomes the mouse’s tail and is also what you’ll hold onto while dipping.

Melting the Chocolate

There are many ways to melt chocolate, so feel free to use whichever method you’re most comfortable with. For this recipe, I will be following the instructions on the melting chocolate package. This means that I will place a handful of the chocolate disks into a small microwave-safe bowl. Then microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each round, until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.


Dipping the Cherries (The Body)

Hold a cherry by the stem and dip it into the melted chocolate, rotating as needed to coat it completely. There’s no need to carefully drip off all the excess chocolate.


Place the coated cherry horizontally onto parchment paper, with the stem sticking out behind it like a mouse’s tail. The extra chocolate that settles underneath helps shape the body.

Tip: Make sure the stem points backward, not straight up, or the mouse will look like it’s sticking its backside in the air.


Assembling the Head

While the chocolate is still soft:


  1. Hold a Hershey’s Kiss by the pointed tip and dip the flat bottom into the melted chocolate. 

  2. Flip it upside down so the flat, chocolate-coated bottom faces upward.

  3. Dip the bottom edge of two almond slices lightly into the melted chocolate.

  4. Press the almond slices onto opposite sides of the Kiss so they stick out like ears.


Once the ears are attached, gently tip the Kiss sideways (ears facing up) and press the chocolate-coated base against the chocolate-covered cherry, attaching it to the end opposite the stem.


If perhaps you got a little ahead of yourself and forgot to attach the almond slices before attaching the Kiss to the cherry, it is ok because you can still dip them individually in the melted chocolate and attach them in place behind the head.


Tah-Dah, Christmas Mice Recipe Complete!

You should now have a fully assembled Christmas Mouse:


  • The cherry stem forms the tail

  • The almond slices become cute little ears

  • The pointed tip of the Hershey’s Kiss creates the nose


Let the mice sit until the chocolate firms up.


To eat, simply pick one up by the tail and enjoy, just like a stemmed maraschino cherry. Or, if you like to play with your food, bite the head off first and save the body for last! These sweet mice treats would pair well with a warm mug of London Fog or Green Mountain Fog if maple syrup is your thing!
